Field guideService 01 of 05 · Plan

I build businesses from the ground up.

Business development and strategy for people with a skill or an idea. The offer, the brand, the website, the audience, the marketing and the systems, built in the right order by one person. Never from a template.

Chapter 01 · Who it’s for

Where most people are when they call me.

  • A skill

You’re great at something, but there’s no business around it yet.

A trade, a craft, a practice. People already ask you for it. What’s missing is the offer, the brand and the system that turn it into steady income.

  • An idea

You have a concept and a date you’re working toward.

A lease signed, a launch planned, a partner ready. The months before opening decide how the first year goes, so that’s when we start building.

  • A restart

You’re open, but the business never got a real foundation.

It grew one decision at a time. The offer is fuzzy, the brand is a logo, the website is a brochure. We rebuild the base so the rest has something to stand on.

Chapter 02 · What it means

Business development is building the whole business, in order.

In a large company, business development usually means partnerships and sales. For a new or small business it means something simpler and harder: turning what you’re good at into something people can find, trust and buy, and that keeps working when you’re not in the room.

That takes six parts. Most people have one or two of them. The work is building the rest, so they all point the same way.

The six parts, in build order

  1. 01

    The offer

What you sell, who it’s for, how it’s priced and why someone picks you. Everything else is built on this.

  2. 02

    The brand

The name, the look and the voice. It decides what people expect before they ever talk to you.

  3. 03

    The website

Where the offer is explained, trust is earned and the next step happens. Built from scratch for the business, never a template.

  4. 04

    The audience

Email list and social following, built before you need them, so launch day has people waiting.

  5. 05

    The marketing

Search, ads, content and outreach, aimed at the customer the offer was designed for.

  6. 06

    The systems

CRM, automations and agents that answer, follow up and book, so the business runs without you doing every step.

The order matters more than any one part.

A logo before an offer, ads before a site that converts, a website before anyone is on the list: that’s how money gets spent twice.

Chapter 03 · How it gets built

How a business gets built, step by step.

The same sequence whether it’s a sleep medicine network or an Italian deli. Plan it, build it, then grow it.

  1. Plan

    Step 01 · Plan

    Discover

I learn what you’re great at, who it’s for and what you want the business to become, then research the market to pressure-test every assumption.

    You get

    • Market and competitor research
    • Your customer, defined
  2. Step 02 · Plan

    Develop

The idea takes shape: the offer, the pricing, the positioning, the name and the brand direction.

    You get

    • A defined offer and pricing model
    • Name and brand direction
  3. Step 03 · Plan

    Blueprint

A written roadmap: what to build, in what order, and how we’ll know it’s working. A plan you could hand to anyone, and one I can build with you.

    You get

    • Priority-ranked plan
    • Customer journey map
    • Metrics to track
  4. Build

    Step 04 · Build

    Build

The brand identity, the website, the social profiles, the CRM and the automations, built from scratch to fit the business.

    You get

    • Brand identity
    • Custom website
    • CRM and automations
  5. Grow

    Step 05 · Grow

    Launch

The audience comes first. We build the email list and the following before the doors open, then launch to people who are already waiting.

    You get

    • Pre-launch list and following
    • Launch campaign
  6. Step 06 · Grow

    Grow

Marketing, search and the systems that scale, measured against revenue and adjusted as the business learns what works.

    You get

    • Marketing and SEO
    • Reporting tied to revenue

Chapter 04 · Case studies

Two businesses I built from scratch.

Different industries, same sequence. One became a nationwide network; one opened with a crowd already waiting.

Case 01

Solve Sleep Apnea

A nationwide sleep apnea network, built from a concept to a business that runs itself between consultations.

  • Healthcare · Co-founded
  • Built in 9 months
Fig. 2Solve Sleep Apnea, solvesleepapnea.com

partner providers, with a deep focus on San Diego
SEO pages built to rank by location and keyword

Most people with sleep apnea don’t know they have it, and many who do give up somewhere between the first search and the first appointment. We set out to build the bridge: a network that helps commercial drivers and everyday people get answers and get matched with the right provider.

I co-founded it and built the concept from scratch over nine months. Not just the website: the brand, the social presence, the provider network, HIPAA compliance, the CRM and the automation system underneath it.

The center of it is a set of AI agents, including voice agents, that handle patient communication by phone, text and email: answering questions, setting appointments and rescheduling. Our job is to run the consultations and route each patient to the right partner provider. Everything else runs on the system.

Case 02

Buon Cibo Italian Specialties

An Italian deli and catering business that opened with an audience already waiting, and a website that takes money before the counter does.

  • Restaurant & deli · Scripps Ranch, San Diego
  • Started a year before opening

a month in prepaid orders through the website

We built Buon Cibo from the ground up about a year before the doors opened, through Clear the Plate, my restaurant consulting company for restaurants, markets and delis: the concept, the brand, the website and the strategy.

The year before opening went into the audience. By opening day there were more than 1,500 people on the email list and more than 3,000 followers on social media.

The website was built for ordering, not just for browsing: prepaid preorders for dinners, weekly specials and heat-and-eat meals, plus tickets for wine nights and events. It brings in about $20,000 a month in prepaid orders, before anything is rung up at the counter.

  2. 02Brand
  3. 03Website with online ordering
  4. 04Prepaid preorders and event tickets

Chapter 05 · Field notes

What building them taught me.

A few rules I now build every business around.

  1. Note 01

Build the audience before you open.

Buon Cibo opened with 1,500+ subscribers and 3,000+ followers. A launch to people who are already waiting is a different business from a launch to no one.

    FromBuon Cibo

  2. Note 02

Let the website take the money first.

Prepaid preorders and tickets turn the website into a register that’s open all week. At Buon Cibo that’s about $20,000 a month before the counter opens.

    FromBuon Cibo

  3. Note 03

Design it so you only do what only you can do.

At Solve Sleep Apnea, agents handle the calls, texts, email and scheduling. The people show up for the consultations, the part that actually needs them.

    FromSolve Sleep Apnea

  4. Note 04

    Claim your search results early.

Solve Sleep Apnea has 100+ pages built to rank by location and keyword. Search compounds, so the earlier those pages exist, the more they’re worth.

    FromSolve Sleep Apnea

  5. Note 05

    Never start from a template.

A template decides what your business looks like before you do. Everything I build is made from scratch to fit the offer, so it can grow without being torn down.

Chapter 06 · The first step

It starts with a Strategic Blueprint.

Before anything gets built, we put the plan on paper. The Strategic Blueprint is where the idea gets researched, shaped and sequenced, so every dollar after it goes to the right thing in the right order.

It’s yours to keep. Build it with me, with someone else or on your own.

What’s included

  1. 01Concept and offer development
  2. 02Market and competitor research
  3. 03Name, brand and positioning
  4. 04Business model and pricing strategy
  5. 05Launch and growth roadmap
  6. 06Success metrics and tracking

You leave with

  • A defined concept and offer
  • Name and brand direction
  • Market and competitor research summary
  • Customer journey map
  • Website and marketing recommendations
  • Channel strategy
  • Metrics to track
  • Priority-ranked launch or growth plan

A Strategic Blueprint usually takes about 10 business days. Depending on the business, anywhere from 2 to 14.

Chapter 08 · Questions

Common questions about Business Development.

What does a business development consultant do for a small business?

For a small or new business, it means building the parts that turn a skill or an idea into income: the offer, the brand, the website, the audience, the marketing and the systems. I plan them in order and then build them, so they work as one business instead of six separate projects.

I only have an idea. Is that too early?

No. That’s the best time to start. Buon Cibo started a year before its doors opened, and that year is why it opened with an audience already waiting.

How long does it take to build a business from scratch?

It depends on the business. Solve Sleep Apnea took nine months from concept to the full foundation, from the brand and website to the CRM and voice agents. Buon Cibo’s build started about a year before opening. The Strategic Blueprint comes first, usually in about 10 business days, and it tells us your timeline.

Do I need a business plan before we talk?

No. Bring the skill or the idea. The Strategic Blueprint is the plan, and it’s built to be executed, not to sit in a drawer.

Do I have to hire you to build it?

No. The blueprint is a plan you could hand to anyone. If you want me to build it, I can, and nothing gets lost in translation.

Do you use templates?

Never. Every brand, website and system I build is made from scratch for the business it serves.

Do you only work in San Diego?

San Diego is home and where most of my work comes from, almost all of it by referral. I also work nationwide: more than 70 of the watch dealers I build for are spread across the United States.

Show me what you’re trying to build.

You don’t need to know whether you need a plan, a website, ads or automation. Tell me where you are, and I’ll tell you where I’d start.

What happens next

  1. 01You tell me what you’re building. An idea, a business, what’s not working. A few sentences is plenty.
  2. 02I read it myself. Not an assistant, not a sales team. The person who would do the work.
  3. 03You get my honest read. Where I’d start and why. If I’m not the right fit, I’ll say so and tell you what I’d do instead.
